Ruby Remenda Swanson is currently the General Manager of the University of Alberta Botanic Garden. She was a freelance promotional writer for the Children’s Television Workshop in New York City. Ruby has received the University of Alberta Human Rights Education Recognition Award and was a director of PFLAG Edmonton.
Ruby Remenda Swanson grew up in a deeply homophobic time, witnessed the emergence of the gay rights movement, and saw the way the AIDS crisis had transformed the LGBT community. Despite seeing herself as progressive, she was unprepared when her sixteen-year-old son told her, “I’m gay.” A Family Outing is the story of how Ruby moved past her initial shock, fear, and denial to become a public advocate for equality and the acceptance of the LGBT community.
