You may be asking yourself “What can I expect at a take over and how do I participate?”
Step 1: Wrangle up some friends, family or arrange to dine with folks through this event page. This is not a “hosted event” (the pub nights and gravity games nights are great if you are wanting something hosted!). You’ll be eating with the folks you come with, all ages are welcome!
Step 2: As soon as possible make a reservation for your group for Saturday Jan.20th at 7pm (reservations can be made by calling Open Sesame or through the open table app). If 7pm gets booked up, try for as close to that time as you can get, or try to walk in!
Step 3: Show up wearing plaid, be out and proud with your chosen families, partners and dates!
Take over events are part of a movement to reclaim otherwise ‘straight’ spaces by bombarding them with 2SLGBTQ+ community! You can just show up, engage in some same-gender PDA, or simply chill with your friends and laugh. The idea is to queer places around the city as visibility matters!!
We will take over restaurants, clubs, bars, activity spaces, museums, and more! Take Overs are about having fun. Meeting new people. Patronizing places that might feel “off limits” or “out of bounds” for queers and rocking their world simply by being ourselves.
The idea comes from a successful campaign in Stockholm and Seattle to reclaim what had become ‘unsafe’ parts of the city for queer people.
** About our use of the term Queer — We recognize that for many people, the term Queer is a loaded term that can conjure injurious feelings of slurs being hurled in high school. Our use of the word QUEER here is to reclaim the power behind the word for positive social change. We are also using it as an umbrella term for a variety of “Othered” identities (Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Gay, Bi, Pansexual, Lesbian, Butch, Femme, Two Spirit, A-Sexual, etc.). We are using Queer here as a way to spit in the face of normalcy, reject patriarchy and ‘orderliness’ and engage in the act of making spaces visibly queer!
