Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Calgary Pride Festival; everything we do is done by through the work of volunteers. Whether you do it for the experience, to give back to the community, to meet exciting new people, or just for the joy of volunteering, being a part of the Calgary Pride team ensures the continued success of the Festival.

Position Descriptions

General Description

There are a lot of different roles we need filled each year, and we’re sure there’s one that’ll be the perfect fit for you! Check out the role descriptions below to see how you can get involved.

Team Lead

As a team leader, you will be the contact point for all team members, so your communication skills should be excellent. You should also be able to act proactively to ensure smooth team operations and effective collaboration. Ultimately, you should lead by setting a good example and engage the team. If you are interested in being a Team Lead for 2017, please send an email to kevin@calgarypride.ca with the subject line TEAM LEAD 2017. In the text of the email, please specify if you have a particular area of interest for leading and if you’ve been a Team Lead with us before. We hope to have all Team Leads set up early so we can ensure time for training and information sharing. Please note that Team Lead positions will require additional training and meetings in advance of the Festival.

Beer Gardens

Our Beer Garden is a dynamic and highly anticipated offering for the Calgary Pride Festival. With a capacity of over 2000 people – we look to our volunteers to provide a fun and engaging experience while ensuring the safety  of patrons. All volunteers for the below roles must be 18 years of age or older. ProServe or equivalent is not required but is a definite asset.  Patrons are screened for age requirements at the entry gate so this is not a primary function.

Beer Gardens - Bartender
  • Serve beverages including beer and coolers in exchange for pre-purchased tickets
  • Monitor consumption and prevent over-consumption
  • Keep bar area clean and help with setup/tear-down
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required
Beer Gardens - Ticket Agent
  • Sell beverage tickets to patrons
  • Perform cash, debit and credit card transactions
  • Keep ticket area clean and help with setup/tear-down
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required

Pride in the Park

Our festival is a signature offering at Calgary Pride and with over 25,000 visitors our volunteers are integral contributors to its success.

Pride in the Park - Family Liaison

Engaging with our visiting families and their children is a lot of fun! With a playground, arts & crafts centre, bouncy castles and a variety of other activities, we need high energy and attentive folks supporting this family-oriented space.

  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Promote social media initiatives to festival patrons
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required
Pride in the Park - Information Steward

Are you a helper, who loves to answer questions and offer support? Then this position is the perfect fit.

  • Provide information and directions to festival patrons
  • Assist volunteers with shift check in and check out
  • Sell small items such as bottled water, T-Shirts, souvenirs, etc.
  • Perform cash, debit and credit card transactions
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Promote social media initiatives to festival patrons
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required
Pride in the Park - Rainbow Crew

This is the perfect role if you’re outgoing and not afraid to approach people! The primary function of this role is to actively engage patrons at the festival, using our social media tools to promote participation and engagement.  We have some fun social media tools to help, but we need your shining personality as well!

  • Promote social media initiatives to festival patrons
  • Answer questions from festival patrons
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required

Parade

Our parade is attended by over 50,000 people and hosts over 150 entries. If working as a team member, directing members of the public and participants and speaking in crowds tickles your fancy, then we need you!

Parade - Setup Crew

Assist with the placement of road signage and barricades in the staging area and along the parade route.

  • Direct parade entries into the staging area
  • Crowd control
  • Answer questions from parade entrants
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required
Parade - Glitter Crew

Formerly known as “Parade Marshals”. The Glitter Crew will help maintain a safe parade route, and be the representatives of Calgary Pride to spectators.

  • Assist parade setup crew with any last-minute requirements
  • Be a “presence” along the parade route to ensure safety of patrons
  • Engage with parade patrons and promote social media initiatives
  • Provide information to parade patrons
  • Assist with parade route cleanup
  • Report any security concerns to leadership
  • Other reasonable duties as required
