As final preparations for the 25th Anniversary come together, the organizers of the Calgary Pride Parade and Festival want to spread the word that the event is on, rain or shine.

“You can’t have rainbows without a little rain,” is the key message being shared by Calgary Pride and their supporters, in the wake of X-Fest’s last minute cancellation of their 2-day alternative music festival. One of Calgary Pride’s signature events is a free music festival, and features international headliners Catey Shaw (New York) and DJ Citizen Jane (Miami), as well as a wide selection of local artists and performers, family zone, vendor market and beer gardens.

Former Calgary Pride President Dallas Barnes remembers overcoming more adverse conditions in previous years, “The first year I was involved with Pride, it snowed and not just a little. I remember sitting [at the festival] waiting for the Parade to arrive, and thinking I will be the only one [there] today. Low and behold, I heard a megaphone, the familiar thump of the music Pride is known for, and I saw thousands of people approach me. I was relieved and reminded that come hell or high water (or snow) our community always makes me proud”.

Pride festivities in Calgary have never been cancelled for any reason, and organizers say they aren’t about to let that change this year. “Pride has never been about taking the easy way out, or showing up when it’s convenient. Pride is about being there because you believe in it,” says Craig Sklenar, Director of Government Relations at Calgary Pride.

The 2015 Calgary Pride Festival, presented by ATB Financial, will be held from August 28 to September 7, 2015, culminating in the Pride Parade on September 6 at noon. Tens of thousands of spectators are expected this year for the 25th anniversary of Calgary Pride.

Calgary Pride is a not for profit organization that advocates for the LGBTQA* community in our city and promotes a society free from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
